27.03.2024Being his younger brother I have so many fond memories of 'Pixie' as he became known once he entered into adulthood.
But he always looked out for me when we were kids, even though at the time I didn't realise it and happily beat him around the head with my toy cars (I only apologised this about two years ago..) Like the time we were playing war in the school sandpit (Ashlyns in Berkhamsted) and I got clobbered by a lump of wood that someone used as a grenade. I remember crying a lot, probably more in shock to be honest, but he stopped his part in the game to take me home.
Another time while the folks were out shopping or something he found an empty perfume bottle in the bathroom cabinet, and said we should find any sorts of liquid to put inside it, calling it 'The Antidote' possibly mimicking an epoisode of Dr Who that he had recently seen. I remember it ended up looking repulsive with all sorts of chemicals in it but was good fun 'finding' stuff to use.
Or the time he woke me up at some stupid O'Clock hour and asked to borrow my car. I let him have the keys and to this day have no idea what and where he was going.but he got my car back in one piece so gthat was good, unlike his own car a little bit later, that ended up with a write of level of damage to the passenger door and A post after he lost control in the snow. I remember that he gave this car away and moved to Sweden, there was a knock at the door and when my mother opened it was met by two police officers who informed her the car had been used in a ram raid. She told them that he was no longer living in the country so they left and nothing more was done. That car (A Ford Granada Mk 2 in black was last seen in the car park of the Bull PH in Berko where I presume the police found it.
In 2002 we embarked on a road camping trip to Le Mans for the 24 hour race, a week in a field drinking and watching motor racing! After a very heasvy week of little sleep but a lot of great fun (I cannot tell you or would have to kill you) we finally ended up at Ouistreham for the ferry crossing back. Waiting in the queue of cars a rather militant looking customs officer advances and asked me where we have been, obviously all the passes stuck to the windscreen saying 24 Heures Du Mans and the camping ticket next to it go unnoticed and she asks me in poor English if I have been to Spain (??) I said no pointing at all the passes, she gets a bit upset and asks me to open the boot. Bearing in mind it is full of camping gear, and sackfulls of grubby clothes, I asked her if she was sure and she said yes open it, I did this and both me and Pixie took two steps back. When she opened the first bag she almost passed out with the smell, I responded see, told you so.... Oh how we both laughed that day.
He was always pretty funny, I just don't feel I spent enough time with him living in Sweden for over 30 years.
I have so many memories, these are just a couple, they mean more to me than anybody else really so that will be that for now!
But he will always be my big brother and I miss him terribly.
Love you Dave, the best brother a boy could have!
Until we meet again Sleep well mate, you earned it!
